Hi, I've got a '97 sunfire with the 2.4L that was just rebuilt. Everything but the lifters were replaced during the rebuild. Now the engine rocks back and forth enough to move the car. Especially when in gear. But it seems to lighten up after it has warmed up. I also keep getting random misfire codes. Everything in the ignition system has been replaced. Anyone have any suggestions as to what would cause the engine rock and the misfires? I'm thinking fuel injectors for the misfires. Thanks.

Did you try isolating the problem to one cylinder? Did the problem exist before the rebuild?

No, the problem was not there before the rebuild, and I do not know how to isolate the problem to one cylinder. The code is a random misfire.

Why didn't you replace the lifters too ? What got rebuilt exactly ?

I'd guess a vacumn leak is your issue . I hate plastice vacumn lines , damn things break too easy , especially when pulling and dropping in engines .

They are tough to find but I always use a small propane touch , opened just a little and slowly move it over all the vacumn lines (unlit of course) The propane will act as another fuel source and the idle will increase if taken in through a vacumn line leak . Don't worry , your not using enough gas to blow anything up , lol , no risk at all doing it .

Worth a look considering it ran ok b4 the build

No vacuum leaks.

I broke down and took it to the dealer. They think the timing is off. By a tooth they think. But it's kinda hard to screw up the timing. I'm thinking it wouldn't even start if the timing was off a tooth. Has anyone delt with this before? Could it be a tooth off and still start? It runs better when it's warmed up. I know I'm not paying them $300 + to open the timing cover. Thanks.

The 2.4s dont have plug wires. Did you use the pins in the holes of the cam gears?

I didn't have to correct pins, however I had equivalents. I don't think it's the timing. The misfire codes went away on their own, and it running better now. Maybe something in the fuel system? Still rocks back and forth, but only when it's in gear.
