New to this site. My son bought a used 1978 trans am with a 455. I know that not original, but it is what was in it. We are redoing the car. When I put the engine back in, it seems to sit high. The fan gits the top of the shroud. The car was a mess when he bought it. Could this group offer advise on options to lower the engine. I set the engine where the mounts naturally align, but still looks to high.

Check the engine mounts and frame brackets, 400 and 455 maybe different

Some of the A-Body mounts sit higher in the 1970-72 range, but those are the only ones I am aware of. I have seen people put spacers under the mounts so the oil pan would clear the steering center link, or the grease zerks on the inner tie rod ends.

I would inspect both the engine mounts, and the subframe mounts. Also is the engine sitting level? a bad rear transmission mount can cause the engine to tilt back causing the fan issue you describe.
