I had a 96 Cavalier w/ the 2.2, as far as I know it should be an easy swap, they are basically the same engine. There were some slight differences between the 97 and 98 years like -5hp, +5tq, but maybe someone with more in-depth knowledge will chime in.
im in the middle of swapping a 95 cavalier motor into a 98 sunfire.... the 98 has alot more emissions stuff on it im yet to find out what im gunna have to do but im going to use the wiring harness out of the 95 in the 98 and maybe use the computer out of the 95 aswell... so if you have the complete 98 car then you should have everything you need(air breather hose, wiring , computer, etc) then it should be relitivly easy to put the newer motor in the 97... good luck if you decide to go for it keep me updated
yes you can. you shouldn't have to change anything, and if you do, it'll just be the computer. The wiring harness thats still in there should still work. And obviously as long as its essentially the same 2.2L
