ERI to Carb

I am new to Fieros and have a question about a car that I am looking at buy. I found an 88 Fiero that is for sale that is pretty cheap. It is the 4 cylinder engine with a 5 speed. I have been thinking about for awhile on getting one of these and dropping in a bigger motor and doing some body work to it.

But when I was looking at the car I noticed that it’s not fuel injected. So I am wondering , if I put in either a V6 or a V8 that has EFI, is there much I need to do to the car to make the car EFI? Or is the EFI system from the car the motor is coming from sufficient?

The stock 4-cyl is EFI. It used throttle body injection. (TBI) The injector is in the throttle body instead of in the ports. If it truely has a carb, Then someone at sometime swapped it in there. Some folks think the TBI is a carb because they look very similar. You should see a huge injector (about 2" diameter and about 3" long) injector mounted in the middle of the throttle body if it's TBI.

As for swapping to another engine, The swapped engine will have it's own ECM/PCM which gets piggy-backed to the exsisting ECM. For fuel, You just drop the fuel tank and install the correct fuel pump. The Walboro 255 is a direct fit into the gas tank and will easily provide enough fuel pressure for a SBC V-8, Northstar V-8, 3800SC, or just about any larger performance engine. If you want to swap in like an older 3.1/3.4L you can just install the stock V-6 fuel pump.

Thanks for the reply. And I just noticed I messed up on the title to this thread.

But anyway, I see what you are saying. It did look like a carb to me.

Now I am just debating if I want to go through with this. This guy wants $1,000 for the car and almost completed the GT fastback front and rear conversion. Just the rear needs to be fitted better and the taillights installed. There is another body kit I want to go with anyway but looking at the car it is pretty dirty. Looks straight and all but just not too sure. I really don't know what I am getting myself into on converting the motor. I am pretty sure I want to go with a V8 but just not sure what it all is going to take to make it work. And I'm not a motor guy. I can do small things but the motor swap I plan on paying someone (most likely a buddy) to do it.
