Evap canister smells

People,
Another thread on my sunbird- my fuel "recovery" canister, ion the front right corner of my engine bay, may now, after 30 years, be charcoal saturated, and useless. Also, the 2 rubber hoses are rotted. Basically it's dead, so what's the harm in disconnecting it and maybe removing the hoses/stoppering them off?

Unless I can rig up a universal one, may be an idea. After I come back from a trip, car sits a minute or 2, I smell fuel from the hood. Not a big deal, but has to come from somewhere, even emitting from the TBI area. Hey, car runs on gas, right?

I did, BTW, try eliminating the 2 hoses from the vac system to see if it had any affect on my continuing rough idle problem, and no difference.

Both of mine on my vehicles stunk/ stink.................. diconnected the Sunbird's, a while ago yet to do the Silverado's .

I know my old later 70's cars had a replaceable filter underneath..............dont know how people restore the newer ones ?

No ill effects on my Sunbird as of yet .

Pippo, Just a quick note.............on the El Camino forum page, a person claimed he rebuilt his by cutting it apart and replacing the charcoal with fish tank charcoal , rinsing out the foam filter and gluing it back together.

Dont think you or I want to go that route...............................................

BTW, no one makes them new anymore either...................were in the + $60 range anyways.

Some people claim they just put one of those cheap paper element clear plastic fuel filters in between the 2 hoses.( to keep dirt and moisture out of fuel tank - other than the open air on the tank vent line)

Good way to change it. I might just seal off entirely the lines though, and plug the ports at the TBI with a nice port seal, black rubber/neoprene, I think. Thanks, Doug.

No problems running wise as of yet..................been disconnected for 8 months already......................

Depending on you state's emission testing, you might have to keep it in the car and connected for a "visual inspection".

Here its just the tailpipe sniffer test...........................................

Back in New York in the 80's-90's............ that would be the first thing to hit the trash can when you got a used car..............probally not nowdays.................
