ever have probs w shift solenoid on 98 trans?

I backed out of the driveway like anyold day strong in reverse went to d and nothing.it wouldn't go forward til I dropped it down into 2 and 1 .buddy told me shift solenoid inside the pan was bad.I got a filter/basket two shift(solenoid).I took the pan off can't find the shift solenoid.3 diff part stores told me 3 diff things.I went with a local guy he says the book only shows one solenoid.its not in the pan unless its inside the valve body.although I did locate a similar looking plug in on the outside of the tail shaft.any ideas?thanks.

There are several solenoids on the drivers side of the tranny. 1 is for pressure (PCS) and the other ones are for shifting. If u have no 'D' or '3', you may have broken your apply band which unfortunately means a rebuilt or used tranny. Here`s a link:
