Fan wasn't kicking on. Engine temp was boiling, so wiggled engine coolant temp wire, fan kicked on. Ran some more, fan not kicking on. So just unplugged the damn connector to engine temp sensor. Engine fan runs constantly. Need new wire connector I'm thinking.

By disconnecting the connector this caused the computer to go into protect mode turning on the fan.

You may need a connector a sensor or both.

By wiggling the connector you may have just interrupted the connection causing the fail safe mode. (this being said the connector should be able to tolerate a fair amount of wiggling without interruption)

however since I am not there to watch how hard or vigorous you were tugging on the connector it is likely that the connector could be corroded, the female wire connections could be worn.

The rubber seal could be missing and the plastic locking tab could be gone.

Does the fan come on with the A/C?

your problem could be a number of things, from a stuck thermostat, air in the cooling system, coolant without the correct ratio coolant- distilled water, a leak in the cooling system, the sensor and or connector. ETC

start with the basics, check the coolant level and mixture ratio, ( with a tool like the one provided in the link )

http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/C...Shield-Balkamp-Inc-/_/R-BK_7761025_0438142340

Pressure test the cooling system and repair any and all leaks also test the pressure cap. fill the cooling system with the correct mixture coolant-distilled water and bleed the system.

If your unsure about the thermostat replace it with a OEM or Stant thermostat or you could test the thermostat by putting it in water heated on a stove with a calibrated temperature gauge and confirm it opens at the correct temperature.

Then connect a scan tool with live data to confirm the engine coolant sensor is reading correctly while your in there check for codes.

If after this work has been completed and your still having a problem you will want to follow the diagnostic steps in a factory service manual to diagnose the engine cooling fan.

Ok I just checked. And there is no rubber seal on connector. I'll replace and go from there.

when you replace the connector ( it is best to solder the wires and use heat shrink tubing and electrical tape )

The crimp connectors are alright if you cannot solder, just make sure they are crimped good.

For added protection squeeze some silicone in each end of the crimp connector, once the silicone is setup wrap with electrical tape.

You can clean the male blades on the sensor if you want to save the sensor.

Ok replaced "rubber seal" only on coolant temp sensor connector, fan came on at 152 degrees Fahrenheit. Little premature I'd say.

My code reader live data feed, and drove around a bit, and stopped and checked fan cycle, came on at 210 degrees Fahrenheit. So far since putting the a new rubber piece on the connector, hasn't over heated. But it has been only been 300km down the road.

I am guessing without the rubber insert the connector was moving around too much.

Well good luck I hope that is all you needed.

On the road again, no fan, not even with a/c... Unplugged coolant temp sensor again. Bushy the mechanic recommends flushing the system and or changing the cooling fan. He thinks it may be the heater core, or water pump. Brand new water punk though. But, fan does kick on, when I unplug the temp sensor, on my 99 sunfire 2.4L... I have new thermostat. Might buy some rad flush, and give that a try.

Why guess at this problem and burn up your engine.

Lets diagnose the problem or pay a good shop to diagnose it for you.

Step one test for power and ground at the fan with the A/C on and you hear the compressor kick in and see the clutch engage.

Let us know if you have power and ground.

And we will go from there.

something doesnt make sense here. Post number 7 above you state the fan came on when the temp hit 210. Then post number 9 it doesnt work, go back and recheck what you did. Then you mention a 99 Sunfire 2.4, is that the car with the problem or some other car? Heater cores and flushing dont prevent a fan from coming on. As stated above does your AC work? If it doesnt the fan wont come on.
