Hello all,

To preface this, I have a 1997 Firebird. I'm in the UK and so I buy my parts (for better or worse) from Rock Auto.

I'm looking to replace the clutch in my car, plus get the engine and trans mounts replaced. I don't have the skills for that work so it's going to a garage - while it's up on their lift, is there anything else preventative that's worth getting done at the same time?

It's a 3800 Series II with a T5WC 5 speed.

I already have the replacement mounts, but I'm wondering what clutch to get - can anyone help me decide which one?
I don't race it, and the car is completely stock, I just don't want to put a rubbish clutch in there. Does anyone have experience with brands to avoid etc?

Looking at Rockauto I see they have Luk plus a GM throw out bearing.

The Luk Plus is a good clutch, more than enough for the 200-220hp of your 3.8. I would have them check the torque arm bushing also. And the rear axle upper bump stops.

Thank you folks - I'll make sure to grab an LUK+ one then. Appreciate it 🙂

Me again, sorry to be a pain here gents, I'm not very au fait with transmissions!
I've noted that there are 2 different GM branded release (throw-out) bearings... Differing by a fraction of a millimeter (47.5mm vs 47.35mm), but one is significantly cheaper than the other... Can anyone advise on this? Being in the UK a mistake could add a month or more to the wait time for the repair because of shipping, not to mention cost.

The two bearings are GM CT1075 and GM CT1107. I can't tell the difference between the two from the item descriptions.

Nice one Mel, thanks as always for the help.

There are Chevrolet and Dodge vehicles sold here in the UK at dealerships, but they don't have a clue what I'm talking about when I say the word Pontiac, so I don't think they are able to import parts for me!

Chevrolet Camaro with same transmission would use same parts for clutch.

They never sold the Camaro on forecourts here, they were only ever privately imported as far as I'm aware.
While this is all being done, would you advise that I get the rear main seal swapped out?

That requires a pan drop, is it leaking?

There is a leak of oil, it's not drastic but was noted last year during a wheel alignment. I have some UV active dye which I'm going to add to the oil, this will help me to determine how much it is leaking and from where using a UV flashlight, but I can't do that until February when I've got time to take it back out on the roads for a few days.
I assume pan drop will require a new pan gasket too... I'd rather not disturb the seal unless it's necessary though. The car has 75000 miles on it.
