Gone Fishing

The car is a 1989 Pontiac Firebird with a 305 TPI and 5 speed manual. Recently the car will die at idle. If I let it sit for a day and start it, it will run perfectly fine. After 20 minutes or so of driving it will die at idle or when it gets under 1500rpm. If I keep the revs up or drive, it will run fine, but as soon as the rpms come down, it dies or idles poorly. Fuel problem?

remove the idle air control valve and clean it with carb spray.
If that doesn't help, it'll need to be replaced.

the IAC valve is located on the throttle body, it has a solenoid that pops out to keep the butterfly valve open just enough to allow air to enter.

it sounds like fuel problems to me. if it was electrical then it would,nt start at all. this is just a guess by change the gas filter and try that. it could be just starting to clog up.

it shouldnt idle at 1500 rpms
it should be around 800

but try cleaning your IAC valve
