i'm the second owner of my 1985 trans am(55,000 miles), it has a carbed 305 and a 700R4 tranny. i removed all emission crap and replaced the carb with a non electrical quad, and put in a vacume advanced hei distubutor. i also replace the exhaust from the headers all the way back. my starter decided a couple days ago to stop working and i mean stop(seized up). i went to the part store(advanced auto)and they gave me the starter list for the engine. it did not fit(wrong one). it was the one listed so i veiwed one for a 350, nope not it. with a little cleaning on the original starter , we managed to run the number on the casting and found the correct starter. turns out i have a PONTIAC, with a CHEVY engine that uses a GMC starter. no where in the maintenance papers does it mention any one replacing the starter , routon pontiac of virginia beach replace the alternator, batter, power steering unit, steering gear box, front left brake caliper and pads. and they painted the car on a orignal owner recall of the bounding agent of the primer causing the paint to peel. has any one else notice their starter being different type or is my car a mutan?
