i'm the second owner of my 1985 trans am(55,000 miles), it has a carbed 305 and a 700R4 tranny. i removed all emission crap and replaced the carb with a non electrical quad, and put in a vacume advanced hei distubutor. i also replace the exhaust from the headers all the way back. my starter decided a couple days ago to stop working and i mean stop(seized up). i went to the part store(advanced auto)and they gave me the starter list for the engine. it did not fit(wrong one). it was the one listed so i veiwed one for a 350, nope not it. with a little cleaning on the original starter , we managed to run the number on the casting and found the correct starter. turns out i have a PONTIAC, with a CHEVY engine that uses a GMC starter. no where in the maintenance papers does it mention any one replacing the starter , routon pontiac of virginia beach replace the alternator, batter, power steering unit, steering gear box, front left brake caliper and pads. and they painted the car on a orignal owner recall of the bounding agent of the primer causing the paint to peel. has any one else notice their starter being different type or is my car a mutan?

If you go to a site such as www.napaonline.com and plug in 1985 pontiac firebird transam 305 you still have 3 starter choices based upon the 8th digit in the VIN, F, G or H. Did they bother asking you for your VIN at the parts store? If not, they were just guessing which was the correct starter.

Gm was putting Chevy motors in everything during the 80's and late 70's. It casused a stir at the time.

GM did have an issue with a large strike in progress in 1984. cost GM quite a bit of money. so they were just pulling parts from other division to make the quota. that would be my guess...
