My 2002 montana developed a humming noise in the front end. I jacked van up and grabbed drivers side tire at 3:00 & 9:00, and there was a little bit of free play. I assumed it was a wheel bearing, as I replaced the other side about 4 months ago. I replaced drivers side with new hub assembly and bearing. Test drove it and still had humming noise, jacked it back up and still had free play from side to side.

Could the problem be possible CV joint?

Thank You

I would look at the tierod end ,cv joint would would click and clunk when turning on a tight radius. Although a bad tie rod would not make it hum , a bad tire would .good luck and keep us posted.

Replaced Tie Rod End

After replacing hub assembly I did notice Tie Rod End needed to be replaced. Fixed that still have humming noise. As well as free play with tire when gripped at 3 & 9 oclock, no play at 12 & 6.

Tire is less than 4 months old shouldn't be problem. but I don't think that would explain free play.

Thanks

Right I agree tires would not cause the free play. I know if you have play at 6 and 12 oclock then its bad ball joint but usually play at 3 and 9 oclock is tie rod.

What you are describing is classic sign of a bad/worn out hub/bearing what brand did you put on ? Is it possible that the 3 bolts that hold the hub on is loose ? stripped ? I did read somewhere that when replacing a hub/bearing you should use new bolts (although I never do).
