fuel filter

[grease lightning SF]

alright so today i was trying to replace the fuel filter in my 99 sunfire and it was basically in the middle of the car under the rear support and it is particularly hard to get too. Because there is this box thing in the way i was just wondering what that is? And can i take it off to make my job a whole lot easier?
