New problem on car. The fuel gauge is reading full- which caused me to run out of gas, and the engine light is still on. The only codes it is pulling are 0452 and 0453. I know the codes could be related to a faulty fuel pressure sensor, or a bad gas cap, however, the fact that the fuel gauge is not reading right makes me wonder if there could be another underlying issue. I can replace the entire fuel tank ans fuel pump assembly for $290 (only $40 more than just the fuel pump assembly, so why not change everything right?) but I would rather not spend the money right now if that is not the problem. Since the pump is working, is there maybe a wiring connector problem on these cars, or is it likely that the assembly is starting to go out though the pump is still functioning normally?
As always, thanks for any input.

Why would you replace the tank unless it's leaking!

Update

Ok, dropped the fuel tank and checked all the wiring and removed the pump. The pump is aftermarket, not factory. When the previous owner or whoever he had do it changed the fuel pump, they knocked the float off the side of the assembly. I tried to put the float back on, however it just will not stay. Also, the fuel pressure switch on top of the assemble does not seal tightly. It seems this is a very cheap replacement part- not sure of the manufacturer, but the parts used to make this thing do not seems to fit together properly. I am going to order a new fuel tank and assembly and see if that solves the problem. I know it sounds crazy to replace a non-leaking tank, but the pump by itself only has a 1 year warranty. The tank and pump assembly has a three year warranty. And again, for a $40 price difference, why not?? I think of it like insurance for my parts. I want the best coverage, hoping I will not need it, but being prepared in the event I do. Will update once I replace the tank and pump and let you know if that fixes the problems.

I don't know what year your car is, or how quickly you need the parts but, you can get a tank and pump assembly for just under 150 dollars new (1998 2.4L). But would most likely take a week for shipping.

Fuel pump assembly - 59.56 with free shipping.
Fuel Tank - 90.24 with free shipping.

Both have a 1 year warranty.
