I went to the parts store today to get a new fuel pump for the 86 2m6. They told me that i needed to buy a filter as well to be able to get the warranty on the pump. Maybe that is what is wrong with my car. I will check that first but the question that i have is how hard is the fuel pump to change? I would just dig into it but with the work schedule i wont be able to till Tues. So what will i be up against? I was told that it is in the center of the car. There isnt a access panel to get to it is there? That would be awesome.

Thanks

According to "the book" the tank has to come out to remove the pump. Oreif has posted several links to fiero shop manuals. You could search his posts and locate it?

Yes you have to drop the tank to change it.
The filter is the internal tank filter that you should change when you change the pump.
It actually isn't bad to do once the car is raised high enough.

I got a couple of hours head start on in before it got dark. Got the hose clamps loose and the tank drained. The only thing left is the two nuts holding the retaining straps. Doesnt look to be so bad.

Still no signs of what is producing the electrical smell or the hot console.

Well that was a wast of time and $100. That didnt fix it. I didnt see any signs of heat around the fuel pump. The pump is under fuel so there is no way it will make heat. Well not enough to soak through the body under the console. I am back to thinking it is the ECM. I cant figure out how heat is making it all the way up to the arm rest from there but it has to be. There is nothing else electronic under there?

I noticed that today i can feel heat coming out the side vents between the seats. If anyone else has a 2M6 can you you check after about a 30 to 40 min drive to see if there is heat being produced by your ECM. There was no heat from the arm rest today so im not sure if the heat from the vents is normal.
