Here is the vehicle in question: 2005 Pontiac Grand AM SE 3.4l V6 Vin "E".

Here is the issue: The vehicle appears to be running within all the normal parameters accept when I stop at a stop light/sign. When the vents fans are running at said stop sign/light I am getting a light fuel smell in the cabin. This is the only time in which it occurs.

Recent repairs that I did that may be causing said issue: Replacement of spark plugs and spark plug wires with OEM spec parts. I have performed this repair before on this vehicle in the past with no issues. The mileage is higher at 144,383. I have previously (5 years ago) had the fuel pressure regulator replaced.

Any insight as to how to solve the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

have you checked the fuel rail for leaks?
have you checked the injector seals for leaks?
do you have any cracked hoses that are part of the EVAP system?
have you checked the fuel line from the tank to the engine including any external fuel filter?
is the check engine light on?

The engine light is not on. I have checked the fuel rail for leak corroded, but not leaking. Will check for injector leaks. Did not see any cracked lines. Will trace fuel lines from from tank to engine and check for leaks around fuel filter and report back. Thank you for help.

Progress, but no solution in sight.

Traced fuel lines. No leaks. Checked injector seals. No leaks. Checked all rubber hoses. No cracks,no leaks.

Drove it to a friends house. On the way there the engine light came on. Used friends scanner took. Error code for misfire. Ran real time misfire scan. Cylinder 3 misfire. Values between 0 and 29 on active misfire scan.

Attempted to change out coil to brand new coil. No change. Put original coil back on. Shut engine down and let cool before inspecting spark plug. Fouled plug. Replaced plug with brand new plug. Ran active misfire scan. No change cylinder 3 values between 0-29. Tack bouncing between 500 an 750 at idol.

Plug wires are brand new OEM as of 75 miles ago.

I may resort to taking it to a trained technician at this point.

check the plug wire with an ohmmeter. no more than 1k per foot of wire length.
Are you stating your code is P0303?
Did you do a compression test?
you did check the plug gap?
have you checked the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator for gasoline, if you see gas the FPR should be replaced.

Yes the code is a P0303. How do you perform a ohm check using a basic multimeter. I have a compression tester, I'll get on that. The injector fuel pressure regulator was replaced earlier this week in an attempt to fix this issue. The plug was a factory AC Delco iridium that was factory pre-gapped so should I still check the gap?

Thank you kindly for your time and efforts melsg5.

most automotive multimeters have a ohm setting, you put one probe on one end of the wire and the other probe on the other end. Set the meter for k (1000) scale and for a one foot wire you should have 1k, 2 foot wire 2k, etc. I would never assume the gap is correct, always check it .060.

Got professional help and the problem is still not solved

I had the engine inspected by a local shop and they performed a few tests.

Compression test came back within acceptable levels.
Ohm tested all wires and all passed.
Injectors tested and injector on cylinder 3 was stuck wide open. It had failed.(the injectors had never been replaced and were the factory originals) They replaced the injector and seal.
Tested pcv valve and idler tested and working.
The seal in between the air intake manifold and engine block was replaced as a precaution.

The end result is that the car runs a bit smoother and has brought the idle Rpm back to stock. Engine light and misfire is gone. Alas, I still smell gas when at a stop sign and the smell is strongest when I start the vehicle. *Multiple expletives*!! I grow very frustrated with this....

Thank you for the continued help.

I will check the gap of all plugs as soon as I am able.

did you mention the gas smell to the shop that performed the work?

and they explained the cause of the gas smell?
