Gas Mileage and shifting

I been driving my stock 01 Sunfire Gt 2.4 for a while now and noticed about 17-20MPG city... is that all these things get? or do i need something fixed? also first gear seems to shift really hard into second when its below running temp? Feels almost like it has a shift kit? did they have those for these? i used to buy them for my old AOD foxbody mustangs. any advice is appreciated
 
you cannt really judge much by city driving, take a reading on a long highway drive. You dont mention how many miles on the engine and more importantly how many miles on the air filter? I would think shift kits are available for almost all trani's and again how many miles on the car, maybe time for a fluid/filter change?
 
theres just under 100k on engine and trans. 96xxx i think. i was asking about shift kit because it shifts really hard from each gear. changed oil and stock air filter not long after i bought it. looking to try and fit one of my "custom" SRIs but im not sure i can do it on an auto or a car this new. im getting the coil packs or whatever this car has n plugs soon for a basic tune up n see if that helps. on a 66 mile round-trip on highway (65mph) im getting about 24-25 MPG.

A new problem has showed up too, when i put cruise control on the speedometer will drop from 65 to around 60 so the car speeds up but im already doin 65so when the speedometer catches up in lets back off n slows back down. anyone know whats up?? thanks in advance for the help
 
it sounds like the trani is going in and out of torque convertor lockup, try having the car scanned for trani codes

Thanks i was beginning to think it wasnt a shift kit... ill have it scanned when i change oil and get it tuned up with new plugs n coils
 
be sure to mention what was exactly wrong too, cuz my tranny is shifting the same way.
