For you folks that have never changed the gear oil in your 5 sp. Getrag you might want to think about doing it! I had no problem changing it in about 10 minutes. Drop the drain plug making sure ya don't loose the little gasket! (I did). Flip the dip stick up and pull it out & filler back up with 2 Qts. of Royal Purple gear oil! In my opinion the shift works about 50% smoother then it did before the oil change! Cost about $20.00----I'm happy now that's over!! Dennis

Originally GM said to use 5-30 oil, then changed to syncromesh oil. Thick gear oil will make the transmission hard to shift when cold.

Phone, Thanks for the post! I used 2 qtrs. of Royal Purple Synchromax in my gear oil change. I'm also using Royal Purple 10w30 in the motor with great success & a 1036 NAPA oil filter because it's wholes a little more oil then what GM calls for. There's a whole new world in OILs since 1988!
