i have a 2 door 98 grand am gt. i was going to get into my car after school i was pulling out of the parking lot and saw that power steering fluid was leaking all over my foot it was coming from the end of the steering column the people i talked to had no idea why it was doing this. could the shaft seal at the end of the steering column be bad

are you sure it wasnt red dex-cool antifreeze? Did you check the fluid level in the PS pump reservoir?

guess then it is possible up the shaft or a hole in the firewall and then the steering column.

fill the power steering reservoir to the proper level turn the engine on and look at the steering rack as someone turns the wheel back and forth.

its not dripping anywhere that i can see nor is it dripping on the cement its coming into the car

yes it goes down and thats when the wheel becomes hard to turn, but i cant see it leaking anywhere on the cement only in the car

you jacked the car up and looked underneath at the rack and pinion unit and the hoses leading to it?

looks like its leaking from the bearing at the end of the steering column

look at the exploded parts diagram at www.gmpartsdirect.com for your car under the steering section. There are no fluid tubes, hoses, passageways, etc. outside of the engine compartment for steering. So to have fluid coming out the steering column is really unimagineable to me and the leak has to be on the rack or hoses.

depends on how large the leak is, usually used for seals that have worn out, try it nothing to lose.
