I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am 6cyl
My car started loosing power when accelerating. I mash on the gas and the car takes off really slow. On the highway I have a really hard time getting over 50mph. The CEL came on and when I took it to Autozone they told me the upstream O2 sensor was showing a fault. I checked the O2 sensor and I saw that the wiring had fallen onto the exhaust manifold and the connector started melting and burning. I have a new O2 sensor ready to be put on but I just want to make sure this will solve the problem before I keep throwing money at it. Someone mentioned to me that the catalytic converter might be clogged but I get no fowl smell from the tailpipe and the exhaust seems to be coming out consistently. Any ideas?

Once you have the new O2 sensor installed and reset the computer code you will have to see if it turns up another code. If you havent changed your air and fuel filter in many miles those are 2 simple and inexpensive things you can try. You can test for a clogged convertor by temporarily disconnecting it and seeing if the problem goes away.
