2000 grand am with 4cyl dumping oil like crazy. any ideas?

I assume by dumping you mean you have an oil leak? Clean the engine and then start looking for the source of the leak. If that doesnt work they have a dye you can put in the oil and look for it under a black light.

What component is low on oil? The engine, transmission, power steering? That will help to narrow down the possible places to look. If power steering it will be the pump, hoses or rack, if engine or transmission a seal or gasket. Was the oil filter changed recently? If the old gasket stuck to the block it will cause a big leak.
If it is a really bad leak look for the cleanest area around the point of dripping, dirt will not accumulate where the oil is flowing. Just follow the trail back to the source of the leak.

I've gotta get the beast on a lift. When I first start the motor it does not leak. About 30 sec later a small steady stream on the left side of the motor.starts to come down.
Shut the motor off and the leak stops. Thanks for the replies I'll keep yoi posted.
