Hello everyone,,, been awhile since I’ve been here. I’ve got a problem with my trans am stalling while I’m driving… I threw a rod two years ago, so I got the motor rebuilt, new cam, pistons, rings, valves, crank was turned, ported and polished. EGR delete, got rid of all the emissions, got rid of the cat, new fuel pump, new distributor, Shorty headers, stage four chip. The problem is when I’m driving down The road doesn’t matter if it’s sometimes 5 miles or 14 miles the car just stalls whether I’m in town or on the highway and will not restart pretty much until the next day. I was at the GM nationals on Saturday. It was like 20 miles to get there and the car ran good. I drove it a few times while I was there. No problems. On my way home. 5 miles before my house it stalled and would not restart, and that was like at 7:30 at night, 8 o’clock the next morning it started. I pulled it in my garage and it was getting ready to stall then it idled back up to cold start. Then started dying again, and finally shut off. I tried to restart, and all I did was crank over. I know there’s probably a bunch of things that could be doing it like the ICM, MAF, TPS. What I’m wondering is, could I possibly have a vapor lock at the tank vent valve or purge valve because I opened up the gas cap and a bunch of air came shooting back at me… it seems like it’s starving for fuel when it’s stalling out which makes me think that might be the start of the problem. If anybody knows or has experienced this problem, please help. I’m tired of getting my car towed. It’s been three times already.

Thanks, Bill

When it won't start, have you tested for spark?
When it won't start when you first turn the key to Run, do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds?
Do you have a check engine light on?

No check engine light,, the pump kicks on. I have spark.. seems like a fuel issue

But to be clear, you hear the pump when it won't start and you have spark when it won't start. Typically ignition failure when hot is what it sounds like.

I didn’t hear the pump working when I tried to restart.. I didn’t check for spark because I was along side the highway at night

Start with replacing the fuel pump relay and beyond that the pump.

I replace the fuel pump and the relay. It’s only got about 700 miles on it.

You have to let the engine run in your driveway with AC on till it stalls and then start testing fuel pressure and spark.

We’ll the a/c doesn’t work but as soon as these thunderstorms pass this week, I will do that and let you know how it turns out… Thanks for your help.

Well, I went out and turned the ignition on, and I didn’t hear the fuel pump kick on. I put a new fuel pump relay in, and it cranks over but does not start. I waited about an hour and tried it again and didn’t hear the fuel pump kick on. i’m guessing the brand new AC Delco fuel pump that I put in that only has about 700 miles on; was bad to begin with because it left me sit three times with the same problem. Usually the next day it would start, but that’s not the case this time. I always knew I had a better chance of seeing the man upstairs then having any kind of luck. I don’t know if you realize how much work is involved in changing a fuel pump without cutting a hole behind the backseats. I don’t know any other thing I can check for before I got a tear it apart again. If you know of anything I need to look for before I start tearing it apart. Please let me know. Thank you.

Test the relay socket and try applying power directly to the pump.
