Hi all!

I've lived in rear-wheel drive land for a while, and I've never had to replace the half shafts on anything before. I noticed while replacing the front pads this past weekend that both inner boots have released their grease. The boots are not cracked or broken. It looks like the metal band that clamps it tight has weakened and has leaked. The passenger side released released a lot of grease while the other side leaked about 1 tablespoon's worth.

I know that they'll be going, soon, so I started looking up the procedure. I was surprised to see that there are 4 tools needed for the job (according to this: http://www.autozone.com/repairguide...nt-Drive-Axle/Halfshafts/_/P-0996b43f80cb2567)

J2619-01 Slide Hammer
J29794 Axle Shaft Remover Extension
J 33008-A Axle Shaft Puller
J42129 Wheel Hub Remover (may not need, since I have a LARGE bearing puller)

When looking for those tools, they are about $150-200 for the lot. Do I actually need these for the work? Do you know if parts stores rent these specialized tools (minus the slide hammer, I just don't have one)? It looks like the axle shaft puller (c-shaped thing) wraps around the inside of the half shaft, and then connects to the extension, which connects to the slide hammer. All together, it would be used to pull the half shaft out of the transmission. http://repairguide.autozone.com/zne...6b43f/80/22/cb/7f/medium/0996b43f8022cb7f.gif

Is there a cheaper alternative to yank it out? I see a Youtube video where the guy just puts a prybar back there and it simply pops right out.

thanks!!

I have just gave it a good yank and it comes out maybe on a car a while back I had to use a large flat screwdriver but usually they just pull out by hand.
