I have a 2000 Grand Am,sometimes I have heat and then sometimes it will blow cool air,I have had the thermostat replaced as well as a waterpump,Any suggestions?
It sounds like you have air pockets in the coolant system. Whomever replaced the water pump and thermostat may not have bled out all the air. The other possiblility is a problem with the air selector door controlled by your hot/cold air control.
I took it back to them and they say now that it is an intake gasket, however an old friend of my dads says he believes it may be that door thing too.I am having to replace the coolant quite often, and have had the radiator "burped" or whatever and they are telling me it will continue to do this until the gasket is replaced..$600.00...and I am just trying to maybe get some more input into what it could be before spending that amount and still not having it fixed as I have already been that route with both the thermostat and the water pump...I appreciate your help very much!
I also forgot to mention that on my controls for my heat/air you have to have it turned all the way up on the max (5) to be able to even tell the heater is even working.
You originally didnt mention you were loosing coolant. The intake gasket is a known failure point on this engine. Do not wait too long or your may run into serious engine inssues due to overheating or antifreeze mixing with the engine oil.
does your fan positions work in all other 1-4 or only 5 if thats the case for your fan speed control its a 25.00 part and its a fan resistor that is back behind the fan on in the inside of the vehicle against the firewall it looks like a microchip with a plug on the bottom of it that will help with the fan speed if that is the problem replacing the coolant often though means theres either a leak somewhere hopefully not the intake or have you checked your overflow coolant cap sometimes when they are cracked or the seal has lost its strength it will start to push coolant out the overflow once the system opens the thermostat and build pressure up its gotta go somewhere and that will be the weakest point
