Hello everyone. My son has a 1999 Firebird with the 3.8 and auto. He is wanting it to be a little peppier. I tried searching the threads about switching the rear to a 3.73, but couldn't really find anything on it. If I read correctly, his car has a 3.08 in it now correct? Would this be a worthwhile swap? Would there be any issues with it? Would this really kill the top end? It is a daily driver.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Jeff

it's not ideal for a daily driver, the 3:08 is an economy axle

Melsg5, Thanks for the reply. I understand that the 3.08 is an economy axle. What would be a happy middle for this car? I run a 3.73 in my 07 Mustang GT and it did not really affect the drivability of it. It did start out with a 3.31 though. Would the 3.42 fit the bill better?

that would be a good compromise between some economy and some what more acceleration. I went from a 3.08 to a 3.55 and it really woke the car up.

I have a 3.8, been doing a lot of research on it, and perhaps consider putting a supercharger in it, can also gain a lot of hp from changing the head gaskets, intake, exhaust...not saying I'm "right" just an idea

We will look into the 3.55's. Thanks for the ideas 5spdgirl. He has plenty of those, including everything you mentioned:)
