All components of my engine are new except what is in the engine (rods, valves, etc). My car started right away when I first got it, and ran fine, moved, and all that. Sat for 4 to 6 weeks. Went to go start it up, nothing. Just constant cranking. I checked for spark, confirmed. Gas is also confirmed. All plugs and such are brand new and working fine. Plug wires, distributor and it's components, new. My problem got narrowed down to low compression- my mechanic took it from where I left off. As far as I know, all he did was test compression, squirt oil in the plug holes, put in new plugs, and try. Still nothing, and he says it will never run unless I get a whole engine rebuild. I was told between 2500 and 3000 total for it. However, Im curious, is there something I can do, such as remove the heads, inspect and clean all the hardware inside, something like that? Or should I go ahead and get a full rebuild. This is going to be my every day car, and price is not a factor right now...Also, it sat since 1978. What would you do in this situation?

First of all what engine is in the car, the original 1956 engine?
How did you verify you have spark?
How did you verify you have gas in the carburetor?
What were the compression numbers?
If the car sat since 1978 what did you do to it before driving it, change oil etc.?
