Hi everybody. I have a 2000 sunfire 2.2, 5 speed and the other week going to work it would shut off while cruising down the highway then start back up again and run as if nothing wrong. Then on my way home from work all the guages droped down to zero and my idiot lights came on. funny thing is the car kept running but it was not at 100%. I pulled over shut the car off and tried restarting and it would not start. I got it towed home on a trailer and when in my driveway on the trailer I tried starting again and it fired right up so I backed off the trailer and parked. later that day I tried to start again and it would not. I turned my key to on to listen for the fuel pump and I could not here it so I checked the relay and it was good. I jumped 12 volts back to the fuel pump from the relay terminal and the pump runs so I figured either not getting 12 volts at relay from ignition, not getting signal from computer or bad ground. Well when I turn the key on I get 12 volts at the relay. The ground at the relay is also good. When I put my volt meter on the terminal at the relay coming from the computer and hit the key I get no voltage. So I got a computer from the junk yard out of te same car 2.2, 5 speed. plugged it in and still the same problem. I checked the side of the block where the computer and starter ground and all is clean. both negative and positve terminals at battery are clean. I also took ignition switch apart and cleaned all the contacts and still nothing.

not sure if the computer is in the wheel well like in the GT, but you might wanna look into any corrosion in the computers wiring harness. take apart and clean each wire one at a time so that you dont mix anything up, and see if that helps. kinda tedious but free and couldnt harm anything

Mine is in the wheel well also. I still have it apart so I'll have to check the wires better. What exactly is the microcompressor thing in the dash? Could that be the problem? If I jump the fuel pump the car will start and run but it runs rough. Also I noticed a few nights that while driving my dome light would go off and on as it pleased.

microcompressor in the dash? i would assume that maybe its got something to do with the a/c? not sure otherwise, never heard of it. I just bought mine 2 weeks ago so im not a 100% on everything in these yet but im learning.

I had a friend with a GT like mine with a similar problem, and when she took it in to get fixed, all they did was clean up the wires in the harness to the computer. Her's would start sometimes and run like shit, or not start at all. it wouldnt ever run smooth until she fixed that. Her's was a little different with the symptoms tho, it would randomly turn on different dash light indicators, run really rough (or not at all), and it wouldnt shift through all its gears, it would stop shifting at second gear. She got that fixed, and all went back to normal.

the interior light coming on and off on its own might be another problem, or it could be linked somehow to the computer not getting the proper signals..

I need to check those wires hopefully I'll have time today

Found it guys. Where the wires plug into the computer somebody must have used a test light on the wire coming from the ignition. I could see the hole in the wire insulation and it had turned all green. Cut, striped, and soldered back together and she fired right up. Any Bare wire exposed under the fender is exposed to the elements so I guess that explains it. Good thinking gm for putting the computer in prob the worst spot on the whole car. Thank for the help guys
