Help with my Firebird 350!?

I have a '72 Firebird and a 350 engine (and a 4-bbl carb) and I was wondering whether or not this would be a good engine on whether or not to work on. If so, could someone please steer me in the right direction as i am not quite sure where to start at
Not really sure on the price range yet, but we (My father and I) were thinking of something you could have fun with on the weekends, but also have a bit of daily driving at the same time.

Also the carburetor is a Rochester Quadrajet. Additionally, we're looking for an exhaust system right now, open to a lot of options.

you can start with an aluminum intake manifold that will fit under the stock hood. Edelbrock Performer would be a good choice. Next would be a full dual exhaust using low restriction mufflers, Dynomax or something similar. Have the distributor recurved and change the primary jets and secondary rods in the quadrajet.
