i have a 1999 grand am with 123,000 miles. i bought it at 121,000 and everythng checked out great. shortly after it began stalling out of nowhere for no particular reason?? when it happens it does it over and over while your driving then wont do it for months. whats going on? had it in the shop and they couldnt find anything even hooking it up to the computer???

When does it stall? While you are driving or on slow down to a stop?

Does it stall like you are running out of gas or stall like you just shut off the igntion? Is there a 1/2 tank or more of fuel when it stalls or below?

Did you take it to a Pontiac or GM dealer or a local shop?

427hemipontiac....

sometimes it happens with a full tank of gas, sometimes with a 1/2 tank...
i will be driving and go to step on the gas again and it feels like there is a balloon or something under it (like pressure) and it wont accelerate at all, then it will start to shake and stall...other times it will drive fine then immediately shake and stall.
i brought it to our shop we use and they hooked it up to the comp. theres no way to even really show them what happens because it happens and then it will be fine for months,
i thought it might be vapor lock but i dont think so now.

For giggles and grins, loosen the gas cap (this might send off a check engine light too, but will reset) and see if this helps. If it does, check the evaporative emissions canister and purge valves and lines.

No other check engine lights ever show, right? The shop would likely have charged you for a lot of parts you didn't need if it was.... I sometimes hate that light. That is why I do my own work too.... $100/hr labor is too much for me...

I will try everything you said. No other lights ever come on except right now my "CHANGE OIL" light is on but i think they forgot to reset it when i got my last oil change.

The same thing happens to my 99 grand am and its usually happening when im getting on the expressway. while giving it gas it tends to stall and not want to go. my service engine light was on and it said my cylinder 2 was misfiring so i changed the spark plug, coil, and wires but that did nothing. have you found any solution to the problem. Does anyone have any other suggestions.

Help me

My 1996 Pontiac Grand Am Se Coup is 10 years old and I like to know if you can help me I got 2 new front tires, the battery is very strong, the engine is very strong but in the city on the street it began to stall 2 to 3 to 4 times,
and when it stalls on the dash board it showed check engine light, plus it needs a new compresser for the air conditioner. do I have to change the belts and do I need an oil change will that stop the stall. What should I do.

Thanks
Roger

I Have The Same Problem With My 97 Grand Am But The Check Engine Light Came On And I Got A Trouble Code 1133. I Called Detroit And Was Told It Was A Power Train Sensor But Wouldn't Tell Me Where To Find It. If I Knew The Location Of This Insuffecient Switching Bank1 Sensor 1 Sensor It May Solve All Our Problems
