I have a 2001 Grand AM with the 2.4 engine, 5 speed and air. The RPMs are way high. At idle they are between 1500 and 1900 RPM. While driving the RPMs are fine, but once the clutch is pressed, they rise higher than they are when under load. If I shift around 4000 RPMs as an example, the RPMs will rise to 4500 or 5000 when the clutch is pressed.
I changed the IAC solenoid then the throttle body which came with another IAC solenoid, thought they are used units from the wreckers. I had the car at the mechanics and after 1 1/2 hours of diagnosing it, the IAC circuit, manifold vacuum for leaks, the wiring leading to the solenoids, on the throttle body, etc. he says it's the computer.
Now, if it is the computer, I will get another one from the wrecker, but do I have to have the computer recoded at the dealer to work with this car? Are there any computers that will work without having to be recoded? Will the keys still work or do I need to have new keys made with a new chip that is coded the same as the computer? Do the keys work off a different module?
Any ideas?
Many Thanks for the info,
Ian
