So today while traveling to work on I-94 in Indiana, I hit a raccoon while traveling at the posted 70mph speed limit. I know I wasn't speeding because I had the cruise control on. After the raccoon committed suicide, the cruise control kicked off, and the speedometer doesn't work. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on what i should be looking for.

I drive a 2002 grand am gt 4-door. The bumper is really messed up, and my one remaining fog light is now gone. I'm not terribly upset about the bumper because the previous owner had already cracked it, that's why I only had one fog light. What's confusing me is that the cruise control and speedometer are both not working now. What kind of sensors could be broken?

The good news is that it drives fine, though it shifts a little harder now. I figure that has something do with what ever sensor/sensors broke off.

Check the VSS, vehicle speed sensor, on transmission case. Did it cause a check engine light to come on?

No lights came on, and nothing is leaking. I haven't had a chance to crawl under the car, but I don't see any cables hanging. I'm at work right now, so i'll have to see about it tomorrow. Driving without a speedometer is very liberating though.

Here's the update. I took the car in to my local independent shop for a transmission service/flush. I told them what else was going on and they said they would take a look. All that happened was the sensor came unplugged. Nothing else, other then my bumper, was damaged. I have a friend here at work whose son does bodywork. He's going to replace the bumper, molding, fog lights, paint it, and take care of the one rust spot I have under my gas cap door for $600.
