How can I tell if the timing chain broke on a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2 liter motor?

If the motor turns over without any unusual noise does that indicate the chain is okay? How do I check if chain/belt is okay and where is it located?

remove the valve cover and turn it over by hand to see if there is valve movement
