How do I check the transmission fluid in my 2003 Pontiac Grand Am?

My transmission has been failing to engage when the car is cold. Sounds like low fluid to me. However, my friend tells me that this is a sealed unit and that you cannot check for fluid levels. I feel that he may be right, because I cannot find the transmission dipstick. Any Pontiac mechanics out there that can help?

hes wrong [your friend] there's a plug on the side of tranny...pull plug [unbolt] and stick ur finger in .nothing? fill until it dribbles out....and they wonder why GM is going down the drain...great idea....

the "plug" that you are refering to is not very easily accessed and should be checked when the car is on a hoist and running you can't stick a finger in as ythe hole is too small (so it's best done by a service tech ) they are generaly refered to as non servicable by the general public..weather it is a good idea ..well probably not, but that is the way they are ...
