how do i reprogram my keyless entry remote for a 1999 pontiac...

...grand am se? the cars ignition broke so i had it replaced so i thought the keys for it was useless so i just left them laying around and sooner or later i lost them when i needed them, i forgot that i still needed the keys to unlock the doors, so now i cant lock the doors, but i realized that it has a keyless entry system, but the remotes were on the same keyring with the keys so there lost as well. but i found out that you can reprogram them. theres a couple of questions i wanted to know, first of all im gonna have to buy a new remote, can i use just any brand of keyless entry remotes, or does it have to be a specific one if a specific one plz tell me which one, and how do i program it to work for my car, plz help you'd be doing me a big favor and thank you for your help

You will have to contact the dealer since the remote keyless entry remote has a special code to work on that particular car(It won't make sense if any remote works, cause if it does, it will open ALL grand ams). Once you get the remote, point it to your car and press and hold lock, and the unlock buttons together for few seconds until your car respond by honking once.
