So i dont know if im using the lemans page as a good section of the forum to ask this, but im always curious on names of transmisson names with numbers in them. Like Turbo 350, Turbo 400. Torqueflite 717 i think its is... But what does the 350 represent on the transmisson of 350 in its name? Is it a certin size of part or what engine it can be mated with?

I have never run across an explanation of names. It could be as simple as the design of a certain transmission was project 350, 400, etc. within the engineering department.

The 350 is the standard duty transmission. The 400 is a heavier duty version. The torque flight 727 is a mopar tranny

So how will i know what type of tranny to use for the right car i want to build. For cruising on low rpms. Or straight line racing on quick rpm's? I want to be more knowledgeable about muscle car transmissons. Is there a source that can tell me more about them other then wikipedia.... ThAnks

If you want a combination of both, low cruising RPM and acceleration, for a GM product, and an automatic transmission, you go with the 700R4. If you want to buy books on the topic try amazon.com or your local library.

Depending on how heavy the car is, a 200R4 would work also. The 700 has a lower first gear, and is used in heavier cars. Both can be built to handle high hp.
