Actually the firebird/camaro were phazed out not because of the mustang sales but falling sales in general, the automakers over the last 10 years had noticed a downward trend in sales of sport type cars and they saw thw SUV market sales rising so instead of investing millions in keeping a sagging low market car in production they decided to shelve it until they could figure out a way to make it more cost effective and marketable ...
unfortunatly the Firebird was left out of the mix because of internal competition ..
GM diden't want to have two cars in the same market (the economy won't support it anymore) so they cut the sports car market into more marketable sections ...
