I have an 89 firebird and i was driving it home and it all of a sudden lost power in the acceleration then it all of a sudden died. I stopped put it in park tried to start it and nothing happened. I open the hood and there is no belt at all. Is this just one belt or a couple and is this hard/expensive to replace. No i dont know too much about cars pretty much just the basics. I know some people who work on cars im kinda just curious what im looking at.

on a 89 i figure you have separate belts for alternator, power steering and AC. a belt for your car your best bet is get 1 of those ribbed belts. get gates belt if you can.they seem to be pretty good belts.i kind doubt that you have a serpentine belt. i had a 78 pontiac once and it did,nt have a serpentine belt. there sould be a diagram on the radiator support that shows how it goes on.

Go to the auto supply store and buy the correct replacement serpentine belt. The auto supply store will need to know the engine and some of the options on the vehicle to get the correct belt.

Under the hood there is a routing diagram which tels you how to route the belt around the pulleys.

One of the pulleys has an automatic belt tensioner. On the belt tensioner notice a small square hole. Use a ratchet or breaker bar to move the tension pulley to put the belt on to the last pulley. Sometimes it is easier to have a friend help with this step, but you can do this yourself.
