How much would a nice paint job cost for a '96 Pontiac Grand Am GT?

really good paint jobs with peal and metal flake and a bunch of layers of gloss and all that can run you 10's of thousands of dollars.
To cahnge the colour of the car, and have it look regular good... 3 thousand was probably a good guess. If you want a little fancy.. you might be able to get that done for 3500 or 4 grand.

Auto paint jobs are very time consuming and labor intensive, which is why they cost so much for a good one. You can go to a Maaco paint shop and get a cheap job done for under $1000, but it will look terrible, especially after a little time passes. $2500-$3000 is about right if your are keeping the same color. Changing colors is more expensive because a lot more work needs to be done. It would cost around $4000-$5000 to change color and have it turn out well.
BTW...trying to paint just the scratches or a single part of the car never turns out well. The paint will not match the rest of the car and it will look bad.
