how to fix rod bearings

my 97 sunfire engine is knocking and i was told it was the rod bearings. Whats the easiest way to get to the bearings. plz help

Pull the engine and put in a lower mileage used engine would be the most cost effective way to fix it.

drop the oil pan remove the rod caps and check the crank for diameter and roundness. if good . use stp oil and grease pre lube new bearings. you can save the crank if its not badly beat up.. this job should be done by a pro. its not really for a non mechanic due to.
techniques, tools, as well as know how. torque wrench, it takes a lot, if you have a damaged crank it has to be turned on a lathe and oversized bearings must be used. the above reply is probably a wiser choice.

my girlfriends cav had a serious knock going. it was just barely over 200,000 KM and then the timing chain snapped. after replacing the timing chain, the knock went away. look into that cuz ive heard a lot of 2.2's comin in with knocks like my gf had, and each time it was only the timing chain

yes and no.....if you put a stethoscope on the bottom of the oil pan you can hear the bottom end. the op said rod bearings. im assuming you have been heard the guide rail hitting the chain. but i was not there

you are quite right. only way i knew it was the timing chain each time was cuz they all had snapped ones and wouldnt start. all i had to do was stick my hand on the tailpipe while someone tried starting it and feel which way the exhaust was flowing. in every case i had, the exhaust was inhaling, which told me valves or timing chain. i assume that it would still start with bad valves, so i went for the timing chain. each case is different, but a lot of mine ended up being the same. but thats city to city. sometimes a lot of cars will have the problem in one city, but no cars will have that problem in another city...
