I have just joined this site in the hopes of getting someone knowledgeable about pontiac sunbirds and what I need to know about several things I plan on doing to my car.

One of the first things I want to do is swap out the guage cluster. I want to remove the old guage cluster in the dash and replace it with one that has the tachometer and other guages.

My question is what all do I need from the other car that has the tachometer and other guages? Do I need wiring or is it just remove and reinstall like on the Ford Aspire cars?

Welcome, hope to see you on the Sunbird Forum,;)

Found this on a 1st Gen Jbody cluster swap ( simular type setup) but nothing on a 2nd Gen.

Looks like you have to have a GM service manual to check the wiring to see if the additional wires are there for the extra guages, swapping the cluster in and out is the simple part.

Hope this helps..........Doug in P.R.

Thanks for trying. My guage cluster is failing as we speak. The wiring has been checked and all the bulbs in the guage cluster have been replaced. It's definately my guage cluster or more appropriately the electrical line things on the backside of the guage cluster that is going.

The lights usually don't work on the speedometer, oil pressure and gas guages but everything else does, and today the gas guage just quit working, then it started working again.

If I have to replace the cluster I don't want the boring one I currently have, so I'm going to wait and put in the one with the tachometer.

I already replaced the entire front brakes, the entire rear brakes, both rear wheel cyinders, the passenger side rear hub bearing, all the bulbs in the guage cluster and every other interior bulb, the headgasket, the fuel pump, the radiater, the timing belt, tune up stuff, the coolant was flushed 3 times, the idle air control sensor was replaced, the throttle body was completely gone over, and a ton of other things I forget, all since March of this year. I have well over $3,000 in the car and every time I fix something, something else goes wrong inside of a two day period or less.

I still need to replace all 4 speakers since the radio doesn't work right because the speakers are all blown out and junk. But that has to wait until the control arm is replaced and the control arm bushings are replaced and the car is re-aligned.

Maybe I'll fix the speakers next, or maybe I'll have the front struts replaced first and eventually have the rear shocks replaced hopefully.

It's also likely the exhaust will need fixing at some point and the tires have flat spots from sitting so long so I'll need 4 new tires soon too. Obviously the money just isn't there to fix it all so I just keep doing what I can.

I can never sell it since I have every penny I own in it and it's my only car, but it would be nice to stop fixing everything for at least a month.

The car isn't a lemon, or even rusty, its from hawaii and has no real rust to speak of. It sat since 2009 in indoor storage and I'm just trying to get it going again.

At some point I'll also need a replacement for my rear seat, the part you sit on. The fabric is great but it has two or three tears in it.

My car has the brazillian 4 clinder 2.0 liter in it. i figure its likely one of the last remaining sunbirds still in excellent running shape and still on the road with this engine since most cars with this engine were junked and never fixed.

At least I have that unique feature.

Salt air does rust things, check the dash connector where the cluster pops into and gets the power from, mine was corroded ( copper) and had to be sanded.

No one makes the replacement seat covers, junkyard only or those cheapy sets they sell on Ebay are your only options

Too bad you have had so much trouble with your "Bird, cant say I've had, just minor stuff on mine.

Thanks. I finally found the correct guage cluster for it and hopefully it will arrive today. I spend most of yesterday at the junkyard. The yard I went to didn't have the guage cluster I need for my car (apparently they used at least three different ones), but when I had a professional mechanics shop replace all the light bulbs they really did a terrible job and most of the screws in and around that area are either missing or they used the wrong screws. Some holes no longer even have the clips for the screws. Naturally I'm being told it was like that when it came in, even though the interior, dash and other inside components were never taken apart until he got at them.

So I spent the day taking off every screw, clip and other part I even thought I may need. Theres more but why bore you.

The guage cluster arrived and it was really messed up. When I put it in and put the directionals on the guage needles would bounce up and down alot to the directional flashes.

The gas guage wouldn't work and the oil guage went straight up.

I tried everything, nothing worked. Finally a friend managed to repair my old guage cluster and I guess I'll be returning the one I bought.

This car is full of surprises. I just had all the interior bulbs fixed but I think I got hosed since the radio bulb is burned out now, I don't think they ever replaced it.

At some point I'll have new struts and shcoks installed, then have all the speakers replaced. Can't wait to see what happens next to it.
