...ago, I thought that with a tune-up? the wires were changed also, my mechanic today told me I need new wires, how much does this usually cost and why would I need new wires if I just had a tune-up no too long ago?

There is no reason to replace the factory wires, unless they have rotted from oil saturation or have been partially eaten by renegade squirrels. The factory wires will last indefinitely, if you keep your engine bay CLEAN at all times. Modern plug wires have to withstand 50,000 + volts since the ignition systems are high energy. Replacing wires unnecessarily is a waste of your time and money. Have the mechanic show you WHY you need new wires!! or WHICH wire is going bad. They don't all go bad at once, trust me! Power wash your engine at night with the engine running. Use GUNK orange at a do-it-yourself car wash. If sparks dance around your wires, then replace them. I recommend the factory wires for EVERY car. Should you REALLY need new wires, remember that the original ones lasted for all this time, RIGHT??? 2001 engines should need nothing but fuel filter and plugs. END OF STORY!
