should that cost? I know NOTHING about cars and I don't want the mechanic to overcharge me for it. I'll also need a new tire. I just want a guesstimate so I know what to expect.

Thanks for your help!

Go to a wrecking/scrap yard and get a used rim, probably 30 bucks. A tire will cost about 75 for an all-season tire, to 100 or so for a winter tire. Of course, you can try to find a decent used tire if you want to save some money.

Call a few salvage yards to find a used wheel and buy a new tire like your other tires. They might have a good used tire as well, but that's a gamble. An original equipment new wheel from the dealer is going to be overpriced. If this is to be covered by insurance, get the dealers' price for a higher settlement. A steel wheel is plain and cheap. An alloy mag wheel is more expensive- maybe a hunderd or more versus about $15 for a used wheel from salvage. The salvage yard may have a mag that matches, if that's what your car came with.
