I was driving my 99 Pontiac sunfire and the heater quit running and then the car started making...

...a light? ding when i stepped on the gas. And then it died and started smoking. and then when i tried to start it it just made a whining noise. the motor wouldnt turn over. Can anybody tell what the problem might be?

would suspect a catastrophic electrical problem - as far as where to begin looking - that it tough without more info.

Where did it start smoking from?

Initial thought is an alternator failure (short out), followed by a battery internal short, followed by cabling and connection issues.

or.......an engine failure from loss of coolant.
