Lucky me, I finally got one. An 85 SE, 2.5, 5 speed. As yet, I haven't found a definite answer to what the idle speed should be. Mine jumps to 3000 on cold start and settles in at about 1400 once it warms. I thought this was high so I checked the timing, (pins a & b shorted) right on 10 BTDC. I checked for vacuum leaks around the throttle body and intake manifold, nothing obvious. Clear exhaust, clean oil and coolant. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions? Next. Can the wiper motor be disassembled? The "park" contact in mine is closed all the time so the only way to stop the wipers is to get the switch to a dead spot between "off" and "low".

It's probly you're idle air control valve. They're notorious for going bad quick in these guys. Mine's bad, but it only makes it idle lower, which makes those headers gallop  If yours is causing you to waste gas I'd replace it. All it is is a little suction cup inside the valve pretty much.

High idle can be caused by many things. The IAC bad or dirty, The EGR not sealing, The throttle body could be misadjusted (there is an idle set screw), a bad engine temp sensor can even cause it.

You can download many service manuals here: http://www.fieronews.net/fusion/downloads.php
While he does not have the actual 1985 service manual, You can download the 1986 service manual and use that to troubleshoot the problem. There is no difference between the 1985 and 1986 drivetrain's

Thanks for confirming the service manual. I had already pulled the '86 version in hopes that the differences would be minor. I'll check the EGR and IAC this afternoon, after the rain stops... What should it be idling at when warm?

Typically it should idle around 800-900 in neutral/no clutch.
In drive for an auto is usually 750.
These can vary about 50 rpm.

Thanks. I thought 1400 was kinda high for a warm engine. was going to check it yesterday but daughter brought over her explorer with "Dad, can you look at..."
