ignition problems please help

hey guys i am new to the page and this is my first thread, i have recently started working on an 86 se 2m4 5 speed with my grandpa. well it has been freshly rebuilt but he hasn touched it in a few years after a "mechanic" came over to help him and put the batterie in backwords and took out some of the wireing.after replacing the starter and altinator and batterie multiple timeswe are having the same problem, it will start up 24/25 times but when it wont start it dont turn over or nothing.it not the batterie i have replace both ignition switches and am currently replacing clutch saftey switch. any ideas?

when it doesnt turn over, do the headlights come on with normal brightness?

Have you replaced /checked your battery cables? Check all your ground wires also, to the engine and to the body. They must be real clean.

yes, normal brightness, i have checked my batterie cables and all my grounds, have replaced ingtion switches, batteries, starter nothing is working

when it wont turn over, have you used a voltmeter to determine if power is going to the starter solenoid?
