My Sunfire recently started having a strange clicking noise by the steering wheel/gauge cluster. Almost like a blinker, but faster. Today when I went to start it, I turned on power, no lights came on, no gauges, just a rapid fire clicking. The motor would try to start, but would not.

I popped the hood, and when it was on like this, the fuel pump relay would squeal like the dickens. But as soon as I put the steering wheel all the way up, lights, gauges, starts. I put it down, and the motor quit once. Almost seems like a broken/shorted wire between the ignition switch and the fuel pump relay.

I switched the fuel pump and AC relays around just to see if that made a difference(same part) and no luck.

Anyone else ever have this happen?

sounds like you have correctly diagnosed a partially broken wire in the steering column

Or so I thought. Apparently the ignition switch itself was broken...330 bucks for something I coulda done myself because I didn't wanna chase wires/don't have an updated Haynes manual. I guess it coulda been a quick 16 dollar fix if I hadn't had to work the next day...
