I was at a stop sign and my car has been backfiring(carb. probably running a little rich) gassed the LeMans from a stop sign stop and heard a small pop and the car died. I just replaced the Starter, and the car still turns over. I went to Auto-zone and bought a spark ignition tester and didn't get any spark. So I have reason to believe that my ignition blew. First is this common? second is there any online knowledge on how to replace the ignition or how to? I have my service manual on order right now, and the car needs to be moved. I really don't want to pay for towing, and I was looking at the ignition and it didn't seem to complicated to replace. Also is there any other reason to believe that this might be caused from another issue?

backfiring through your carb is ignition related not carb. When you refer to "replace the ignition" what part are you talking about? Do you own a dwell meter? If not, you need one for a points type ignition to be properly tuned. I would remove the distributor cap and bump the engine over till the rubbing block on the points is on the tip of one of the high spots on the distributor cam. A really rough setting is the point gap should be about the thickness of a match book. If the points looked burnt replace them along with the condensor. Try starting the car. If it starts, hook up the dwell meter and set it for 30 degrees. Next you need a timing light to check what it is set for and adjust if necessary.
