scan tool have to be used? computer scan gave error code on personally owned CarMD, which only reads car computer codes and now we want to know if we can clear computer (code) ourselves or have to take to a facility with scan tool ...

Yes you need a scanner.

Autozone will scan the code and even clear the code for you if you ask. But they will only help if you ask to have the code scanned so you can fix it first (or they think you will).
