Is a Firebird "Formula" a higher performance version of the regular Firebird?

my dad owns a formula and i used to think there was only the regular version and the trans-am so then i thought its probably a higher performance compared to the regular firebird, i can tell the difference by looks just not engine.

its was an optional package on the firebird just like the transam was an option. it came with more features and typically a V8, probably a 350 but you dont mention what year car you are talking about
