Is it normal for an 89 Pontiac Sunbird LE to hit 250,000 miles on its original motor?

This car wont die. Ive heard that Sunbirds are crap and I believe it because I rarely see another one. I think I can get another 100k out of it. Its been very well maintained and still looks great. Ive had to replace many things around the engine but have had no problems with the engine itself. I bought it for 400 bucks as a gas getter but the damn thing begs to be driven. I'm worried that when it does quit its gonna be bad. Have you ever owned a Sunbird? What finally stopped it?

Ya they usually dont last long.

Sometimes you get that Special car that was built just right

I had an '88 Buick Park Avenue that had 215,000 miles on it... then somebody stole it! I have no idea how many miles are on it now. You're right, it just wouldn't die.

GM must have known what they were doing when the built engines in the late '80s.

Hell no, My wife had a 90 sunbird, and that thing was literally falling apart at 70,000 miles.

i had an 89 cavalir z24 and its basicly the same car well if you keep your maintance up on it, it should last untill the miles roll over

With proper maintenance its normal. I had a 91' Buick Riviera that had 282,000 miles on it. Ran and drove like it was new. The only reason for its demise was an accident. I replaced what had to be replaced when it asked me to and changed the oil religiously. It ran so smooth that I had to replace the starter a couple of times because my wife would forget that she already started it. Not a good sound. Sunbirds aren't the best built cars in the world, but they can be dependable if treated properly. Same goes for any car.
